An American Carol in German and English
This popular American Christmas song was written by Irving Berlin (Israel Beilin, 1888-1989), probably in California in 1940. “White Christmas” was first heard publicly in December 1941 on Bing Crosby’s NBC radio show “Kraft Music Hall.” The song was later featured in the 1942 film Holiday Inn starring Crosby and Fred Astaire, earning Irving Berlin an Academy Award for “Best Song.” It was used again over a decade later in the 1954 Technicolor film White Christmas. It has now become an international Christmas classic.
During the Christmas season in Germany, you’re more likely to hear the English lyrics sung by Bing Crosby than any German version, although the 1953 German lyrics by Bruno Balz (1902-1988) are quite good. The German version (“Weiße Weihnacht”) has been recorded by many artists including Zarah Leander, Mireille Mathieu, Peter Alexander, the Tölzer Knabenchor (boys choir), Julio Iglesias, and others. See the German lyrics and a literal English translation below.
“White Christmas” – The Original English
Words and Music: Irving Berlin, 1941
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write:
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
