The advent of streaming video via high-speed internet connections has been a boon for expats and other film/video fans in Germany. But the language differences are still there. If you watch a film on Netflix Germany, it will usually be in German. To watch the English-language originals of Hollywood productions from Netflix in the US, a VPN service (and a subscription) may be required.

The region-code-free, global Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD players below are shipped either by Amazon.com or Amazon.de. Make sure you select the appropriate model, and order from the Amazon location that is best for you. With any of these code-free players you can watch DVDs or Blu-ray discs from any region in the world. Connected via an HDMI cable (provided with some of the players) these international Blu-ray/DVD players will work with any modern flat-screen TV.

Region Codes

Many Blu-ray discs (BD) have no region coding. This varies according to the studio releasing the film on BD. German titles that do have such coding are Region B (Europe). Non-coded discs will play on both European and US Blu-ray or DVD players. However, if you have a code-free player like the ones below, connected to a TV screen via HDMI, you can play any DVD or Blu-ray disc without any concern about its coding.

Blu-ray/4K Players – International

These code-free, global Blu-ray players will also play DVDs. Some can also play 3D discs, but a 3D monitor/TV set and 3D glasses are required for 3D viewing.

All of the Blu-ray/4K/DVD players listed below are for global, worldwide use. They are dual voltage and will play discs from any region and in any format (PAL or ATSC/NTSC). The Blu-ray players will also play DVDs. (We no longer list DVD-only players.) With the HDMI cable that comes with most of these units, you can hook up to any flat-screen TV with an HDMI input. Blu-ray/4K Players – Germany/Europe

All of the Blu-ray/DVD players listed below are for use in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries that have 220-volt, 50Hz electrical systems and use the PAL/DVB video standard. Unless noted otherwise, they will play discs from all Blu-ray zones and DVD regions. Blu-ray players will also play DVDs. (We no longer list DVD-only players.) For Blu-ray discs, you can hook these players up to any digital, flat-screen TV with an HDMI input. Blu-ray Zone Code B (Europe) • DVD Region Code 2 (Europe)

The Blu-ray players below are limited to un-coded Blu-ray discs or Zone B (Europe) and DVD Region 2 discs. (Many Blu-ray discs have no region code.) They will not play discs coded for North America or other non-European regions. If you require a multi-region player (all codes), see the multi-region players below.

Sony BDP-S1700 3D Blu-ray Player
The 220-volt multi-system Sony BDP-S1700 Blu-ray player is designed for use in Germany. It is a basic Blu-ray player (for about 87.00 euros) with no frills (no built-in Wi-Fi) that will play only Blu-ray Zone B (Europe), no code, or DVD Region 2 (Europe, Japan, South Africa, etc.). Multi-Region Blu-ray and DVD Players

The Blu-ray players below will play Blu-ray and DVD discs with any region code (ALL). These players are sold and shipped by Amazon.de in Germany, and are designed to work with 220-volt, 50Hz current. However, some are also dual-voltage devices (110/220 volts AC). If you need that feature, check to make sure that the player you want will also work with 110-volt 60Hz AC current.

Dynastar LG BP-250 – HDMI-Bundle, Region-Free Blu-ray Player
The Dynastar LG BP-250 multi-region, dual-voltage Blu-ray player is reasonably priced (about €149.00), especially considering it comes with an HDMI cable, a remote, a USB port, and plays both Blu-ray and DVD discs with any region code. This versatile UHD/4K player can do it all! Plays all regions! The Sony UBP-X800 plays normal Blu-ray (even 3D) and DVD discs plus Ultra HD/4K. It has built-in Wi-Fi (WLAN), allowing easy access to online sources. Considering its price (€401), it should come with an HDMI cable, but it doesn’t. You need to provide your own HDMI cable. The Sony UBP-X800M2 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player is NOT code-free, and it is a 220-volt, 50Hz device designed for use in Germany. It plays only Zone B BDs and Region Code 2 DVDs (Europe), but it has all the other features of the X800 above: Dolby Atmos, UHD, HDR, High-Resolution Audio, Multi-Room, Bluetooth. At 296€ with free shipping, it’s a bargain – if you can do without the code-free and dual-voltage features. It’s a good UHD/4K choice, but you still need to buy an HDMI cable.
