Information Collection and Use

Site Visitorship Data
We fully comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We routinely gather data on website activity, such as how many people visit the site, which pages they visit, where they come from, how long they stay, etc. This Google Analytics data is collected on an aggregate, anonymous basis, which means no personal information is associated with this data. Any site visitorship information that we may gather is kept strictly confidential and is used only to improve the content and design of this site. We sometimes also share such information with our advertisers, but only as general data about traffic patterns. Since we do NOT collect personal traffic data, we can’t share it with any third party.

Cookies
Traffic data is gathered through the use of Web server logs and cookies. A Web server log is a file where website activity is stored. A cookie is a small piece of information that a website sends to a visitor’s computer, which is stored on his or her hard drive. We may use cookies to track repeat visits to our website. Even if we assign a cookie to a visitor’s computer, we do not know who that visitor is unless that person specifically tells us. – NEW (January 2020): Our website now better conforms with GDPR by asking new visitors to consent to the use of cookies. Virtually all websites use cookies to improve the user experience, and we do that as well.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Social Media
The German Way also provides relevant information about life in German-speaking Europe via our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Any data related to those accounts is the responsibility of those third-party providers.

Comment Spam Prevention

We use third-party advertising companies to serve ads when you visit our website. These companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address, or telephone number) about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you. Affiliate Revenue Sharing
We partner with respected companies that provide products and services that we feel are useful and beneficial to our readers. Examples include Amazon.com, Amazon.de, Golden Frog (VPN), Lingoking, and Sirelo (international moving). We earn a commission or revenue sharing from those partners, at no extra cost to our readers when they make a purchase.

Personal Information
We sometimes collect personal information from site visitors, such as a visitor’s name, email address, etc., but this information is obtained only when site visitors voluntarily provide it. Such information is only collected through contact forms or subscription forms for our site and the German Way Expat Blog.

Any personal information we collect is NEVER sold, given away, or distributed in any manner. It is used only for internal use and only for the purposes that the site visitor intended. You will never receive email from us unless you contacted us yourself or signed up for information.

Our Internet privacy policy applies to all website visitors, no matter where in the world they may reside.
