Sarah and friend.
Former German Way co-blogger Sarah Fürstenberger is a 39-year-old mother of four who relocated from Heidelberg, Germany to Galway, Ireland in 2010. Although she has left us (temporarily we hope), she has been part of this blog almost from the start, and we want you to know something about her.
Sarah spent 12 years living in Germany, first in Freiburg and then in Heidelberg. Originally from metro Detroit, she worked as a translator and technical writer for many years within and for the automotive industry and also taught German and held cultural training classes for executives at the many car companies in the area. Her first job was in a small publishing house in Freiburg, where she learned how to translate and “desktop publish”, which nowadays seems a somewhat archaic practice. Having lived in Germany as a student, employee, and working mother, she understands the difficulties that come with living in a foreign country.
As is somewhat obvious from her surname, Sarah is now married to a German and is raising her children bilingually. The older two attend Irish schools and speak both languages very well. English is catching up due to the recent move, but unfortunately, they are considered too old to have to start learning Gaelic in school. Sarah has just started a new job at a very large software company as a technical editor. When she gets a moment of peace, she enjoys reading and hanging out with friends, and when she gets a spurt of energy she likes to go running. Sarah also has her own blog on expat life called Patchwork Expatter.
