Meetup is also a good way to connect with people with mutual interests. I've made new friends that way since I moved to the US last year. You can enter search your interests: particular sport, food, cooking, travel, part of town, age of kids, etc. Seems to be the answer to a "Verein" or "Spielgruppe."

Hi Lania,
Not even a Sportverein? I thought everyone did that! ;-) But if you grew up here, you didn't need a club to make friends - that's just for us Auslaender...
Where are you in the US? I imagine every region has its own quirks. I suppose I would say... take a class? Americans love self-improvement!
Let me know if you do ... good luck!

Hey Ruth!
Interesting article - though, I myself, from Southern Germany, never joined ANY club over there. But maybe you could tell me how and where to meet and get to know Americans over here in the U.S. as it's not in a club ;-)
